- description
- Excerpted from: “Dangers and Wonders, a Field Guide to Unworld” \ > The Bractonemys Viridis, or "Verdant Shield Turtle," inhabits the humid lowlands of the Sylvani Marshes, where thick moss carpets the soil and ancient trees loom over pools of stagnant water. These turtles are medium-sized, their shells spanning no more than a meter in width, yet their distinctiveness lies in the rich, greenish hue of their carapace, which blends seamlessly with the moss and algae of their surroundings. > > \ > The Bractonemys' shell is not a mere defense but also a living garden, home to various mosses and fungi that grow in symbiosis with the creature, lending it an even greater air of camouflage. These plants emit spores that, when inhaled by humans, induce vivid dreams, often regarded as omens of fortune or peril depending on the season. Because of this, hunters seeking these turtles often wear protective veils or brew anti-spore tonics before venturing into their territory. > > \ > Although slow-moving and placid, these turtles possess an unusual defense mechanism. When threatened, they exhale a thick, green mist that contains the spores of the mosses on their shell, temporarily blinding or incapacitating those nearby. This mist has also been noted for its peculiar properties: alchemists in Unworld use it to craft sleeping draughts or to enhance dream-visions, especially when mixed with herbs harvested under moonlight. > > \ > Bractonemys Viridis are herbivores, feeding primarily on the soft water plants and lichens of the marsh. However, their sluggish gait belies a tenacity and resilience, for they can remain submerged in water for hours at a time, and their shells, when harvested, are said to enhance one's endurance against physical fatigue when worn as armor. > > \ > In the marsh, the turtles nest among the roots of great, twisting trees, laying eggs that are nearly indistinguishable from the smooth, moss-covered stones that surround them. The hatchlings emerge already bearing faint patches of green, ready to blend into the verdant world around them. --- Learn more and keep in touch at [tekwitch.com/unworld](http://tekwitch.com/unworld)
